Working Holiday: Which Residence Permit is Required

To Whom The Working Holiday Permit Is Addressed

The Consolidation Act on Immigration lists several specific categories of workers who may enter Italy outside of the quotas of the Flows Decree. These categories also include the case in question. Young foreigners who, based on agreements between countries, carry out occasional work in Italy based on mobility programs can benefit.

The entry visa for Working Holiday, as we have seen, can only be granted to young people from countries with which there are bilateral agreements. Such agreements are currently in force with the following States: Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Canada.

These agreements are specifically aimed at young people aged between 18 and 35. The purpose is purely to promote cultural exchange between countries, through a stay longer than the classic 90-day tourist visa.

The Regulations For Applying For The Working Holiday Permit

The Working Holiday Permit must be requested within eight working days from the date of entry into our country. The request must be made directly to the Immigration Office of the competent Police Headquarters. The documents that must be presented are as follows:

– Four passport photos

– The receipts for payment of the postal slips for the application and issuance of the residence permit

– Photocopy of the passport

– A revenue stamp of 16 euros

– Photocopy of an identity document of the host, together with the declaration of hospitality

– Medical coverage for urgent medical expenses due to accident and illness.

Duration And Conversion Of The Working Holiday Permit

This type of permit has a maximum duration of one year and, upon expiry, cannot be converted into another type of residence permit.

The young foreigner may work for a total period not exceeding six months and for no more than ninety days with the same employer.

There are, however, exceptions to this indication. For example, in the Agreement with Canada, a provision was made for the possibility of the foreigner working for the entire duration of the stay even with the same employer.

As we have seen above, health coverage is required by the authorities for the issue of a residence permit.

The guarantees cover all emergencies due to accident, illness, and possible hospitalization, with compulsory passage through the emergency room of a public hospital.

The maximum sum is unlimited in Italy, without any excess, while it has a ceiling of €30,000 in the Schengen Area, as provided for by European legislation.
