Updating The Residence Permit in Italy: What To Do

As we all know, foreign citizens who intend to stay regularly in Italy are obliged to apply for a Permit of Stay, within eight days from the date of entry into Italy.

The following year they must carry out the renewal procedure, starting sixty days before the expiration date.

Obligation To Update The Italian Residence Permit

Holders of a residence permit in Italy must ensure that the Residence permit is updated if the data on it changes.

The obligation to update the Residence permit exists for the following cases:

  • Change of residence or domicile from one province to another, including to apply for family reunification;
  • Renewal of passport.
  • Change of personal data (surname, date, or place of birth).
  • Registration on one’s residence permit for a minor child who has not yet reached the age of 14.

Procedures For Updating The Residence Permit

To fill out the Permit Update Application, the following documents must be submitted:

  • 16-euro revenue stamp;
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport;
  • Photocopy of the applicant’s Residence Permit and photocopy of the Permits of the children, if registered on the residence permit.
  • Photocopy of the tax code.

In case there are any changes in biographical information, such as change of name, surname, place of birth, date of birth, or citizenship, a Declaration from the Consular Authority of the country of origin must also be attached.

Once the postal kit has been sent, you will subsequently receive a summons to the “Questura” by the Immigration Office. At the appointment, fingerprints will be verified, original documents sent through the kit will be submitted, and passport photos will be provided.

Police website: you should enter the case file number in the space provided and then click “Submit”.

Immigration Portal site: if the application was submitted through a Poste Italiane “Sportello Amico”. In this case, one must enter the username, and password and then click on “Confirm”.
